Q

How molecular compounds differ from ionic compounds?

A
  • They can be solids, liquids, or gases at room temperature.
  • They tend to be insulators,
  • low melting and boiling points because the forces between the molecules are weak.

Q

How to name molecular compounds?

A

1) The first element in the compound uses the element name.
2) The second element in the compound has the suffix ‘ide’
3) When there is more than one atom in the formula, a prefix is used which specifies the number of atoms.
4) when the first element has only one atom, the prefix mono is not used.

ex. N20__ Dinitrogen Monoxide
N2O3__dinitrogen trioxide
NF3__ Nitrogen trifluoride
