Unit B Section 3.1 Flashcards
table salt’s chemical name
sodium chloride and its formula is NaCl
In 1787, a French chemist named Guyton de Morveau created a naming system, or nomenclature, for compounds
always putting the metal element first. For example, zinc and oxygen combine to form zinc oxide
Since 1920, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) has been the body responsible for agreeing on the appropriate name for every chemical compound discovered.

What is a subscript number?
“Sub” means below
No subscript number indicates that only one atom of that element is needed.
What is an ionic compound?
Ionic compounds are pure substances formed as a result of the attraction between particles of
opposite charges, called ions
The atoms stay together because they are trading electrons
Properties of ionic compounds
- Made by mixing metals with non-metals
- Break apart into ions in solutions (wet mixtures)
- conduct electricity
- solid at room temperature
- distinct crystal shape
- High melting and boiling points
What is a molecular compound?
Occurs by mixing two or more non-metal elements together.
- The atoms get mixed up and form new bonds. (inner particles are stuck together in a new way)
- The atoms stick together because they are sharing electrons.
Properties of molecular compounds?
- made by mixing different non-metals
- do not break apart into ions in solution
- do not conduct electricity
- solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature
- High melting and boiling points
What is a chemical compound?
whenever two or more elements are chemically joined to form new chemicals with new properties.
What contains neutral atoms?
molecule
What is a diatomic molecule?
a diatomic molecule composed of two atoms of the same kind of atom.
What is an ion?
an atom that is no longer neutral. either has a negative or positive charge because it either lost or gained electrons.
What does a subscript indicate?
How many elements are in the atom?
What do these (s),(l),(g), (aq) indicate?
The state of the compound:
s) = solid
(l) =liquid
(g) = gas
(aq) aqueous solution( when something is dissolved in water
