Q

When they noticed that sport media is catered to a masculine audience because it is mostly consumed by men, what does the sport-media complex do?

A

The complex invests in men sports and there is more air-time dedicated to those sports. This reflects what we show on the screen (fights) and the replays (hits).
Commercial organizations then present products and ads catered to men (action movie trailers, deodorants with weird smells, trucks…a lot of trucks).

16
Q

What is the goal of the sport-media complex other than profit?

A

To cater a hegemonic masculinity

17
Q

What is an example of ads reflecting the audience of sport?

A

Golf is still perceived as an upper-class, white man sport. Ads and sponsors show expensive cars, trips, watches, etc.
If you watch pro-wrestling, you won’t get the same ads because they are catered to a different class, and even children.

18
Q

What does media do to influence sport?

A
  • Event planning (prime time = bigger audience)
    • Ex: halftime show
  • TV time-outs.
  • The move of a franchise to a different location
    (with a bigger viewership)
  • Creation of sport adapted for tv (Twenty20 cricket)
  • Changing rules to render golf more exciting
    • Ex: 4 day golf tournament.
    • Ex: Showing the batter order in baseball.
19
Q

What percentage of the sport do the show on TV vs the time of the time-outs and ads?

A

Rugby 90%
Hockey 81%
Tennis 80%
Basket-ball 80%
Baseball 70%
Football 66%
Golf 20%

20
Q

What is shown the remainder of the time during time-outs?

A
  • Ads
  • Sponsor messages
  • Replays
  • Close-ups
  • Information
  • Statistics
  • History
  • Information about the athlete
21
Q

What is the problem with gender in sport media?

A

Adding women to sport discussions (side line reporter, sport analyst).
Issue: We always see the same “type” of woman – young, attractive, hair down, make-up.
Research shows that women are used to increase male viewership.

22
Q

Most viewed women sports are when____?

A

Women bodies are most revealed

23
Q

If women sport is broadcasted its because______?

A

the team or person is being successful

24
Q

What is nationalism in sport?

A
  • We often link sport to the idea of the nation. For example, “hockey is Canada’s game”.
  • A real Canadian drinks Molson Canadian, while watching hockey. Everything is linked in the complex.
  • We often use sporting events to remember a specific event (wars, soldiers, etc.)
25
Q

What is banal nationalism?

A

Symbols are overused to a point where they lose their meaning
Ex: Canadian flag - represent the country’s pride and freedom but overused so lost its meaning
Ex: national anthem - people aren’t fighting or dying for their country they are only playing hockey. The anthem is over used and lost its meaning

26
Q

What is the problem with media and race and ethnicity?

A

sport has rejected visible minorities; same thing for the media.
This is still something that is happening today…especially with social media.
Ex: 2 broadcasters were being hated by people for not being Canadian so shouldn’t talk about hockey but both of them were actually born in Canada, they just don’t have the same ethnicity

27
Q

What is media literacy?

A
  • The ability to approach media sources with a critical and discerning eye.
  • The ability to build an understanding of how media messages shape our culture and society.
  • The ability to use critical thinking when tackling the media.
