Unit 5 topic 6 Flashcards
the science of rockets lies on the physics principle what…?
for every action- there is an equal and opposite reaction
what are the three basic parts of the rocket?
1 THE STRUCTURAL AND MECHANICAL ELEMENTS: is everything to the rocket itself to engines, storage tanks and the fins outside that help it goes into flight
2. THE FUEL: can be any number of materials including liquid oxygen, gasoline, and liquid hydrogen, the mixture is started in the combustion chamber, the gases escape as the exhaust comes out of the nozzle.
3. THE PAYLOAD
referred to the materials needed for the flight, included crew cabin, food, water air, and people
what is the exhaust velocity
is the speed of the exhaust leaving the rocket which determines the range of the rocket
what is the gravitational escape velocity that has to be achieved if humans were to venture space?
28,000 km/h
what does solid fuel have that liquid fuel doesn’t what is the disadvantage?
solid fuels have a lower exhaust velocity than liquid fuels. thats why liquid is better
who was the first scientist to successfully launch a liquid fuel rocket?
robert Goddard
what is a stage on a rocket?
is the section of the rocket that drops off once its fuel is used up. This makes the remaining of the rocket lighter.
who was the first person to develop a v-2 rocket for war
Wernher von Braun his invention led to the birth of NASA
what are computers used for in space?
used to calculate orbits, keep track of other satellites collect and store data.
How does the Law “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction” explain how rockets lift off? Use exhaust velocity in your answer.
it contributes because for every action their will be a opposite reaction The greater the exhaust velocity of the gases, the greater the acceleration.
what is one thing rockets can’t do compared to gravitational assist?
rockets are used to blast spaceships into orbit but cannot send them on long journeys thought the solar system.
what is gravitational assist?
is a method of acceleration which enables a spacecraft to achieve extra speed by using the gravity of a planet. the planets gravity attracts the craft causing it to speed and change direction like a slingshot.
what are charged couples devices? what is the process of using this
they record images by converting light signals into digital format. they are then sent by a computer where they are processed in ways that can replace noise and sharpen images
how did the Hubble telescope get clearer views of the stars?
because it isn’t affected by the earths atmosphere
what is an example of a natural satellite
small bodies in space that orbit a larger body ( the moon is a satellite of the earth)
