Nuclear, Heat and chemical
what are the three alterations of the environment that are pollutants?
human development farming, and garbage dumps
can living thing be pollutants?
farm Animals and introduced species yes because they will alter a environment
how can you determine somethings toxicity
the amount (dose) of a chemical determines its toxicity
How do we determine how much a chemical is in our water, air, soil or food?
we use parts per million (ppm)
what does Ppm tell us?
tells us the #mg of toxin per 1kg of material or #mL per 1 000 000 mL of water
so 10 Ppm means 10 mg/kg or 1mL/1 000 000 mL of water
what is toxicity
the ability of a chemical to cause harm to an organism.
what is acute toxicity
when serious symptoms occur after only one exposure to the chemical.
what is chronic toxicity
when symptoms occur only after a chemical accumulates to a specific level after many exposures over time.
what is lethal dose 50
the dose of a chemical that will kill 50% of the population to which it is applied.
