unit 5 topic 5 Flashcards
where are radio waves received from?
stars, galaxies, nebulae, the sun, and even some planets.
what advantage did radio telescopes give astronomers over optical telescopes?
with the development of radio telescopes, astronomers gained an advantage over optical telescopes because they are NOT AFFECTED BY WEATHER, CLOUDS, ATMOSPHERE OR POLLUTION AND CAN BE DETECTED DAY OR NIGHT.
who was Karl Jansky?
he was an engineer that built a radio antenna
what did Karl Jansky learn from his discovery?
learned to identify radio emissions, that rose and set with the sun, planets, and stars. From his observations, he learned that the radio waves came from space
who observations did Grote Reber make?
he explored Jansky’s discovery further. He discovered that the strongest radio waves came from particular places in the sky. He thought radio objects were sending these emissions. He “Listened” to the stars. He would hear hissing statics sounds and the sound would become louder when he turned in to an area in space giving of large amounds of radio waves. those were the radio objects.
what does the resolving power of an optical telescope relate to?
it related to the fineness of detail of the image
what is one factor for the wavelength of the resolving power?
the smaller the wavelength the better the resolving power.
what is the main difference between radio waves and light waves?
radio waves have wavelengths that are millions of times longer than light waves, meaning that these waves hive less state of quality but can penetrate dust clouds in the galaxy where light waves cannot.
the waves are coded with color what is the color astronomers see when there is low intensity what about high?
blue for low
high is yellow-green and red
how can great resolving power be achieved?
by combining several small radio telescopes
what is interferometry ?
a technology that electronically connects two or more separate telescopes to combine their images
how do you accurately measure the position something is in during interferometry
the greater the distance between the radio telescopes the more accurately they can measure position
what is the method that allowed telescopes to be connected without wires?
Very Long baseline interferometry
what can VLBI produce?
images 100 times as detailed images as the largest telescopes that exist today.
what is the brightest radio object in space
is the centre of our galaxy the milky way and the sun is the brightest out of all and Jupiter is second.
