Unit 5: Research Flashcards
Barnum Effect
When people think that personality descriptions apply specifically to them despite the fact that the description is vague and encompassing
Experimenter Bias
When the experimenter gives clues as to how they want the participants to act due to their own bias
What are the steps of the scientific method?
Perceiving the question
Hypothesis
Testing
Conclusions
Reporting
Control group
Group that receives the placebo or isn’t manipulated
Confounding variable
Variable that might change results of study that researcher should be aware of
Independent variable
Manipulated variable that is introduced
Dependent variable
Behavior that depends on independent variable
Operational definition
Operations that experimenter must use to control of measure variables (list of behavior examples/indicators)
Empiricism
Experimentation is the most important if not only foundation of scientific knowledge
Correlation coefficient
represented as r, shows strength and direction of relationship
-1 is inverse (one up one down) 1 is both up
closer to 0 it is the weaker the relationship
