Chapter 2- Nervous System + Horomones Flashcards
Central Nervous System
Brain and Spinal cord
Controls life sustaining functions and all thoughts, emotions, and behaviors
What is the brain responsible for in the CNS?
Makes sense of info, makes decisions, and sends commands to the body
What is the spinal cord responsible for? (Outer and inner)
Connects the brain and PNS
Outer section carries messages from the brain to body. Inner section is responsible for fast reflexes and is a “mini brain”
What are Afferent/sensory neurons
Carries messages from the senses to the spinal cord
Sensory pathway
What are Efferent/motor neurons?
They carry messages from the spinal cord to the muscles and glands to make reflexes
Motor pathway
What are Interneurons?
Connect efferent and afferent neurons
Describe the reflect arc of the spinal cord
Afferent gets info, interneurons act as a bridge, and efferent causes the reaction in glands or muscles from the info
What is the PNS
Peripheral nervous system
Transmits info (sensory input) to and from the CNS
Involuntary muscles vs the reflex system
Involuntary muscles (glands, organs) are controlled by nerves on or near the spine, not IN, which would be the CNS reflex system
What does the somatic nervous system do?
Controls voluntary muscles. Sends messages to CNS from senses and from CNS to voluntary muscles
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Controls the automatic functions
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
What does the sympatShetic division do?
Part of autonomic nervous system
Gets body ready for stress and is active while in stress
What does the parasympathetic division do?
autonomic
Returns body to normal function after stress and is responsible for day to day activities
What are the Endocrine glands?
Secrete hormones direct you into bloodstream
What does the pituitary gland do?
Controls and influenced all other endocrine glands- hypothalamus controls glands by influencing pituitary
Oxytocin and growth hormones
