Unit 4 Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration Study Guide CP2 Flashcards
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work
What is the function of ATP and what does it stand for?
ATP stores and releases energy and stands for adenosine triphosphate
How is energy released from ATP?
The high energy bond between the 2nd and 3rd phosphates is broken.
What is photosynthesis?
converting water and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen, using light energy
Define autotroph and give an example of one.
an organism that makes its own food (usually with light energy)
Define heterotroph and give an example of one.
an organism that consumes food for energy (or decomposes other organisms)
What do plants take IN during photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide, water, & sunlight
What do plants give OFF during photosynthesis?
Oxygen & Glucose (sugar)
Write the equation for photosynthesis.
In words: Carbon Dioxide + Water (presence of light) → Oxygen + Glucose
Chemical formula: 6CO2 + 6H2O (light) → 6O2 + C6H12O6
What is the main pigment in plants? What color does it not absorb well (reflects?)
Chlorophyll → does not absorb green light
What are the 3 major factors that can affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Light intensity, temperature, amount of water.
What is the definition of cellular respiration?
Process that releases energy from food in the presence of oxygen
Write the equation for Cellular Respiration:
In words: Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + Water + ATP
In chemical symbols: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
How are the reactants & products of cellular respiration and photosynthesis related?
They are almost opposite reactions. The products of photosynthesis are the reactants of cellular respiration and the products of cellular respiration are the reactants of photosynthesis.
aerobic
aerobic refers to a process that uses oxygen.
