unit 1 study guide_KEY 22 Flashcards
What is science?
The investigation and exploration of natural events and of the new information that results from those investigations.
Can science answer all questions? Why or why not?
No, it can’t answer questions of belief, values, opinions, or feelings.
What is the difference between a law and a theory?
A law is a rule that describes a repeatable pattern in nature - Never violated. A theory is an explanation of observations or events based on knowledge gained from many observations and investigations.
Define independent (manipulated) variable.
The factor you want to test → The thing being changed to observe how it affects the dependent variable
Define dependent (responding) variable.
The factor you observe or measure.
Explain what a control group is in an experiment.
Contains the same factors as the experimental group but the independent variable isn’t changed
Explain what a constant is in an experiment.
A good experiment must be controlled, meaning only one variable is changed at a time.
List the steps of the scientific method in order.
Observe
Ask a well defined question
write a testable hypothesis
Make a plan (details of the test)
Experiment
Record, evaluate, interpret, and analyze data
Conclusion - logical explanation AND critique
What is a hypothesis?
An educated guess about the outcome of an investigation - MUST BE TESTABLE
What is data?
pieces of information
What does it mean to critique something?
Identify problems and successes with an investigation
What does “SI” mean in terms of measurements?
“International” system of units (french - Systeme International)
Why doesn’t the USA switch to the metric system like everybody else?
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ - Will cost too much
