What did they use the furs for?
Coats jackets, felt hats.
What is the barter system?
When you go to a store and trade goods for goods instead of money.
What is good about the barter system?
They establish good feelings of respect and trust for one another.
What is a wampum belt?
Decorative beads used to represent friendship.
Who were the major groups that took part in the fur trade?
First Nations
Merchants
Coures de bois and Voyagers
What did the First Nations contribute to the fur trade?
They hunted and trapped animals. The woman skinned the animals and prepared the pelt. Then they loaded their canoes with fur to deliver the goods to the trading posts.
How did the merchants contribute to the fur trade?
In both French and English fur trades the merchants financed and organized the trade. They purchased trading goods from Europe and sent them to Canada.
How did the coures de bois and voyagers contribute to the fur trade?
They paddled on long journeys in the wilderness to trade for furs with the First Nations. Later thee men paddled canoes from trading forts to Montreal.
What was good about the Hudson’s bay?
Close to fur
Many rivers flowed into the Hudson’s bay
Larger supply ships could deliver.
Who were nor’westers?
Traders from Montreal, who extended the fur trade. And they also paddled canoes back and forth though trading forts.
What is an inlander?
People who lived year round at trading forts.
Why did each company keep building trading forts?
To be close to the First Nations trappers
Who was Alexander Mackenzie?
A man who found a passage between the Rockies.
