Spain and France were expanding their empires, Britain was in competition with them and wanted to prevent them from becoming more powerful.

In Britain the cities were overcrowded and there was little good farmland left. Colonies provided them a place to resettle.
Religious Freedom
Many religious groups in Britain were treated badly because of their beliefs, they wanted yo find a place where they could practice their religion freely.

Frances priority was collecting furs, timber, metal, and fish from the land.

New France was very cold, too cold for farming, however it was the best place to fine furs.

New France was based mainly on fur trade, the coureurs de bois ran most of the fur trade.
