Unit 4 - AOS 1 - Assessment of Fitness Flashcards
Parts of assessment of fitness
- Pre- testing
- Post-testing
Purpose of Pre-testing
- Baseline for future comparison
- Highlights strengths & weaknesses
- Talent identification
- Basis to design training programs
- Goal Setting
- compare to norms/avg
purpose of post-testing
- Motivation for athlete to dedicate themselves to a training program to quantify individual improvements (physiological, and also motivated to make teams look at results)
- Evaluates success of training programs (future modifications)
- Monitor physiological progress improvements (chronic adaptations)
Considerations of fitness testing
- What will it be used for?
- Costs involved?
- Equipment and facilities required?
- Safety? (conditions of enviro & current fitness/health/illness/injury levels)
- Scheduling?
- Types of testing chosen? (max vs sub-max)
- Confidentiality?
- Individual considerations?
- Gender
- Social issues?
pre-participation health screening (understand individuals current health and physical condition)
** Informed consent**
Assessment of fitness PROTOCOLS
” rules and procedure surrounding the ways in which fitness tests are conducted and ensuring the results provide relevant and accurate information. “
- Specificity, Objectivity, validity, accuracy, reliability
Protocols - Specificity
The tests chosen to need to consider the fitness requirements of the sport. (determined by activity analysis)
Protocols - Validity
Will the tests chosen measure the fitness components relevant to the sport?
Protocols - Objectivity
- The tests chosen need to be free from bias or personal opinion
Protocols - Accuracy
- The tests chosen need to supply accurate information where experimental error is reduced.
- accurate equipment, appropriate facilities, trained administrators.
Protocols - Reliability
The tests chosen need to be performed in a consistent manner so the data collected is comparable. (pre and post testing.)
- Need … Sam tests, same warm up, same surface and equipment, same weather, same time of day (…)
Feild vs. Lab Fitness testing
Feild
- Predicted values & compare to norms, submax
- Measure a large team/group at once
- Time & cost effective (less/cheaper equipment)
Lab
- Extremely accurate (not safe for unfit people)
- ‘Gold Standard’
- Usually requires trained assessor & specialised equipment
Assessment - Aerobic power
- Vo2 Max (the highest exercise intensity at which there is a steady state in oxygen consumption)
- Coopers 12 min run
- Yo-Yo Test
Assessment - Body Composition
- BMI
- Skin folds
- DEXA & TOBEC Scanning
Assessment - Anaerobic capacity
- Phosphate recovery
- Wingate 30 second cycle ergometer (the higher the peak power & lower the fatigue index the greater the anaerobic power)
Assessment - muscular strength
- Grip strength
- Seven stage abdominal strength test
- Max bench press and leg press (1 RM)
