Unit 3 Flashcards
Function of Stage?
Flat platform for placing slides under.
Function of Diaphragm?
Controls the amount of light that passes through the stage opening.
Prokaryotes
No nucleus/ membrane bound organelles, smaller and simpler than eukaryotes, mostly unicellular.
Eukaryotes
Cell with a nucleus and membrane bound organelles, larger and much more complex than prokaryotes, mostly multicellular.
Matthias Schleiden
All plants are composed of cells. (SCHLEIDEN through the grass).
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Saw organisms in a drop of water, made 1st microscope
Theodore Shwann
All animals are composed of cells (swan).
Rudolf Virchow
All cells come from existing cells. (Cows come from cows).
A (traditional cell theory 1)
All organisms are made up of cells.
B (traditional cell theory 2)
Cells are the basic unit of structure + function.
C (traditional cell theory 3)
Cells come from pre-existing cells.
D (modern cell theory 1)
Cells contain hereditary information. (DNA).
E (modern cell theory 2)
Energy Flow occurs within cells.
F (modern cell theory 3)
All cells are basically the same on chemical composition + metabolic functions.
Difference between rough and smooth ER.
Smooth- Makes lipids.
Rough- Covered with ribosomes which make proteins
Same- Transports molecules.
If ribosomes aren’t functioning in a cell, what happens and why?
Protein synthesis stops and the cell eventually dies. Because they catalyze reactions.
How do you calculate total magnification?
Objective power x Eyepiece power.
Spontaneous Generation
- The idea that living things come from no living matter
Francisco Redi
- Proved that Spontaneous Generation wasn’t true with meat and maggot experiment.
Who has ribosomes to make proteins
- Prokaryotes and eukaryotes
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis
Mitochondria
- Site of cell respiration
- Powerhouse of cell where ATP is made
- very active heart muscle
Chloroplast
- Site of photosynthesis
Endoplasmic Reticulum
- Transports materials through the cell
Golgi Body
- Site where cell products are packaged for export
Lysosomes
- Contain digestive enzymes to break down old cell parts
Cell membrane
- Controls what comes and goes
Cell wall
- Provides support
Vacuole
- Storage
Nucleolus
Makes ribosomes
Cytoskeleton
Structural support and makes cell 3D
Centriole
- Assists in cell division in animal cells only (spindle fibers)
Outer layer of an animal cell
Cell membrane
Pasteur
- Meat broth experiment to disprove spots round generation
