2.2 Information classification
Information classification
. Sensitive . Non-sensitive . Private . Public . Personal . Business . Confidential . Classified . Partially and completely anonymised
Sensitive
Sensitive information should not be generally available, usually if it could cause harm if it was released.
Non- senstive
Information that can be released and likely wouldn’t cause harm.
Private
This is information about individuals or organisations, this includes contact information, it is also covered by the DPA.
Public
This is information about government and other publicly owned organisations.
Personal
Personal information is private information about individuals.
Bussiness
This can include information on products and/or services, company and executive profiles, credit and financial information, market research, and so on.
Confidential
This is private information that should be kept private. This is a higher degree of restriction than sensitive information.
Classified
This is public information that should be kept private.
Partially and completely anonymised
Information that is completely anonymised has had any information that could link the record to the source, or the person or organisation it’s about removed; while partially anonymised information has had some information removed.
Impacts on the holders of information
. Heavy fines . Imprisonment . Loss of revenue . Loss of reputation . Loss of productivity . Loss of custom
Regulation and legislation
. Holders of information are governed by regulation and legislation
. Systems and procedures may have to be put in place to adhere to these.
