. Code is produced by the programmer but made available for anyone to modify
. Little or no licensing cost
. Can be used on multiple systems with no restrictions
Closed source
. Closely guarded and protected by intellectual property rights and copyright, therefore its not open for modification
. You purchase a right to use it, but don’t own it
Off the shelf
. Built with a standard design and framework
. Cheaper than bespoke
. May need to pay for updates
Bespoke
. Designed to meet the specific needs of a company
. Expensive to build
. Will be updated depending on the company
. Upfront costs are expensive but licencing costs aren’t
Shareware
. Provides an opportunity for you to tr it before you use it
. Personal service from the developers
. Cheaper than off-the-shelf
Freeware
. Copyrighted by the developer
. Developer retains all rights
. Distributed without the source code
. Can be downloaded, copied and used without restrictions
Embedded
. Used to control machines or devices
. Specialised for the particular hardware it runs on
. Has time and memory constraints
