Unit 1 - LO3 Understanding Business systems Flashcards
3.4 Connectivity Methods
LAN
. Network for a group of computers within close proximity
Ethernet
. Allows communication in both directions
. But only one direction at a time
. If two messages are simultaneously placed onto the network at one time they may crash into each other and bring the whole network down
Token ring
. All computer are connected in a ring or star topology
. Only the host that holds the token can send data
. Once the recipient is confirmed the token is released
WAN
. A network that spans large geographical areas
. They can be private or public
. It connects to a lot of smaller MANs or LANs
ASDL (asymmetric digital subscriber line)
. Supports faster transmission of data over the copper wire telephone lines than the traditional voice modem
ISDN ( integrated services digital network)
. A set of standards for digital transmission of data, video or voice over traditional telephone copper lines
Leased line
. Rather than operating through national and international telephone wires, provides a fixed- bandwidth data connection
. Meaning bandwidth is only available to the leasee
MAN
. Connects users over a larger geographical area than a LAN but smaller than a WAN
Satellite
. Satellites in geostatic orbit are point- to- multipoint communication systems as they receive transmissions and rebroadcast them.
