3.1 Types of Servers
Server
.A powerful computer or device which serves a particular need for a network
. Can also be a piece of software that operates on a network device
File
. Useful for businesses or individuals who need to hold and manage a large number of files
. Stores files, indexes them and remembers where they are to retrieve them
. It also takes responsibility for the security of all the files
. Ensures backups are done at an agreed time
. Manages the printing of documents
. Controls printers on the network and allows employees to send print requests to specific printers
. Also re-routes print requests if there are any problems
Application
. Install, operate and monitor the applications shared by other devices on the network
. Also manages security and permissions of certain applications
Database
. Manages databases with multiple users
. Provides computers with services relating to the access and retrieval of data from a database
Web
. Can be hardware or web server software
. Reacts to the HTTP requests to deliver content and services form a client
. Software or Hardware which acts as an electronic post office
. Receives emails from users on the network both internally and externally
. Forwards it onto the recipients, who may be internal or external
. For external senders the mail server send the mail onto the server of the recipients domain.
. The mail server uses SMTP to send the mail
. The mail server uses POP3 or IMAP to receive it
Hypervisor
. Manages different operating systems or copies of the same operating system on a single computer or computer system
. Manages operating systems so that it receives the resources it needs
