Unit 2 - Lesson #7 (Group Dynamics) Flashcards
Stages of teamwork:
- Forming — initial orientation and interpersonal testing.
- Storming — conflict over tasks and ways of working as a team.
- Norming — consolidation around task and operating agendas.
- Performing — teamwork and focused task performance.
- Adjourning — task accomplishment and eventual disengagement.
What is forming?
This is the introductory and ice-breaking stage of team formation. In this stage, team members are introduced to each other and start to get acquainted. Team members are starting to learn about each other and figure out their strengths, their respective roles, and how each of the members fit together.
What is storming?
In this second stage, conflict, tension and competition is often introduced to the team. Emotions usually start to increase, and tensions start to develop. Different ways of doing things and various ways of approaching team tasks start to form. Hostility and fighting are common occurrences during the storming stage.
What is norming?
In this third stage, things and emotions start to “normalize.” The team may not be performing at its peak level yet, but the wrinkles are starting to be ironed out, and good progress is starting to be made. Personality conflicts and tensions are likely worked out and consolidation around tasks and agendas start to form. This stage often includes elements of sharing, trust building, and cohesion.
What is performing?
The performing stage is indicative of unity and interdependence. This is when the team really comes together to accomplish tasks through effective teamwork. The team is very organized and it functions very well. This is likely the most productive stage in terms of work being accomplished and goals being met.
What is adjourning?
Even though some models identify only 4 stages of team development, there is actually an often overlooked fifth and final stage. Teams do not last forever, and within organizations especially, there comes a time when teams complete their tasks and formally disband - this is the last step: the adjourning stage. During this stage it is always beneficial to acknowledge the hard work of all team members and celebrate the success of the teamwork. The best and most successful teams adjourn with a feeling like they would all appreciate working with one another on other projects again in the future.
