Why is it important to study development?
- To study behavioral patterns within society that may help better people
- Be used towards individual personal growth
- Why certain changes happening physically
- Understand human evolution → change in society
- Be able to learn to adapt to changing society
- How communities function
What is development?
Pattern of change (positive or negative) that begins at conception and continues throughout our lifespan
What is life development?
- look at development from when baby is in womb to death
What are the different domains of developement?
- Physical development
- Cognitive development
- psycho-social/socio-emotional development
Why is it important to study life-span development?
- linked to many areas of psychology
- explains group, individual and cultural behaviour
- understand when and how physical, mental and social function change through life
What are physical processes?
produce change in physical nature. Gene inherited from parents, development of brain, anything physical (outside), hormonal change of puberty
(anything that changes our physical appearance)
What are cognitive processes?
change in individual’s thought process, intelligence and language.
- anything requiring you to think
What are socio-emotional processes?
change in the individual’s relationship with others, change in emotions, change in personality
- how others affect emotion
What is nature?
- development and traits are influenced by genetics
- idea that we inherited traits and these traits will affect our experinces
What is nurture?
Development is influenced by one’s environment
What is stability?
our personality and traits remain the same -> result from heredity and early childhood experinces
What is change?
Our personality and traits can change anytime through life
What is continuity?
growth and development is a slow process that occur over time (very smooth)
- leading up to a goal
What is discontinuity?
Development happens through stages that are abrupt and in each stage their is at least 1 stage
- going through one stage, something happens, go to another stage…
