In 1858, the British government took direct rule over India and the period known as the Raj began.
Cotton and deindustrialization
As the industrial revolution took hold of Britain, they needed more raw materials for the factories and they also need markets to sell their goods. Their solution was to sell their goods in the British colonies (like India)
Britain and India’s conflict
Cotton was an important export for both Britain and India. Britain banned the import of all cloth from India and other laws were created to further restrict trade in cotton. Which caused the deindustrialization fo India.
