UNIT 2 - CELLULAR RESPIRATION Flashcards

1
Q

what is a redox reaction

A
  • a redox reaction is a chemical reaction that involves the transfer of electrons from one substance to another.
  • redox reactions are coupled reactions that play a key role in the flow of energy through biological systems.

Q

what does LEO the lion says GER

A

when a molecule LOSES electrons, it OXIDIZES and undergone a process called oxidation.
when a molecule GAINS electrons, it REDUCES and undergone a process called reduction

Q

whats an example of a redox reaction

A

cellular respiration
when glucose is oxidizes, it loses electrons
oxygen is reduced so it gains electrons.
C6H1206 + 6 CO2 + 6H20 + ATP

Q

WHAts a series of redox reaction in cellular respiration?

A

C6H12O6 + 6 O2 –> 6 CO2 + 6 H20 + ENERGY
ORGANIC. INORGANIC ATP
this equation represents an overall reaction
- CR involves the oxidation of glucose thru a series of redox reactions
the enrgy released at each step is stores primarily in the form of atp molecules
this allowed the enrgy to be harnesed by the cell in steps instead of in one big step that would result in the enrgy loss and harm the cell

Q

what are electron carriers

A

electorns are said to carry reducing pwoer since the reduced form of a molecule(which accepts electrons carrying energy) is always at a higher energy level than the oxidized form. electron carriers are compound sthat pick up electrons from energy rich compounds and donate them to low energy compounds

Q

what are examples of electron carriers

A

NAD+ (NICOTINAMIDE ADENINE DINUCLEOTIDE) is reduced to NADH
FAD (flavin adenine dinucleoutide) and the reduced form is FADH2

Q

what is aerobic cellular respiration

A

cellular respiration includes the catabolic pathway that break down energy rich compounds such as glucose to produce atp
aerobic resperiation refers to those pathways that require oxygen since its aerobic silly

Q

substrate level?

A

atp is formed DIRECTLY in an enzyme catalyzed reaction by transferring a phosphate grouup from the sugar derivated to adp
occurs during GLYCOLYSIS AND KREBS CYCLE BABY

Q

OXIDATIVE LEVEL???

A

atp is formed iNDERECTLY by a process that couples the oxidation of NAHD and FADH2 by the ETC with the synthesis of ATP by phosphorylation of ADP
OCCURS DURING ATP!!!
