THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Flashcards
THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM WHAT IS IT
the endocrine system works with the nervous system to maintain homeostasis
THE endocrine system also releases hormones from various glands directly into the bloodstream.
has slower and longer effects compared to nervous system.
what are the endocrine glands
do the diagram
what are hormones
hormones are chemical messangers sent to many parts of body
produce a specific effect on a target cell or organ
examples are
human growth hgh
antidiuretic adh
and oxytocin
draw the hormone action on target cels
what are steroid hormones
steroid hormones are lipid based hormones like estrogen and test
steroid hormoens can easily diffuse thru the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane
inside the target cell steroid hormones bind to their receptors and activate specific genes
what are water solbuel hormones
water soluble hormones are polar such as epinenephrinine and insulin
they cannot diffuse thru cell membrane
and bind to a receptor on the surface of a target cell
the receptor hormone complex starts a cascade of reactions insdie the target cell
as a result, the impact of the hormone is amplified
the master glands (hypothalamus)
The hypothalamus is a part of the nervous and endocrine system. It’s part of the brain and controls the pituitary gland. It also receives signals from sensors in the body and secrete releasing hormones that go to the pituitary gland.
The releasing hormones form the hypothalamus stimulate the pituitary gland to secrete hormones that act on other endocrine glands.
Many of the hormones released from the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary are tropic hormones which stimulate other endocrine glands to release other hormones
