lesson 7 photosynthesis organisms Flashcards
what is photosyntehsis
it consists of two sets of reactions
- photo: light dependent reacts that capture light energy
- synthesis: light independent reacts that produce a carbohydrate(g3p)
6co2 + 6h20 + light energy –> glucose + oxygen
chlorophyll a vs b
a has a methyl group at r position
b has a aldehyde (-COH) group
- affects the type of light energy (wavelength) absorbed
whats chlorophyll
- green pigment
a pigment is a compund that abosrbs certain wavelengths of light while reflecting others - absorbs light energy
several types
chlorophyll a (blue green)
chlorphyll b (yellow green)
chlorophyll molecular compositon
- a porphyrin ring
Mg atom surrounded by a hydrocarbon ring
electrons absorb light energy and begin photosythesis - contains long hydrocarbon tail called phytol
the hydrocarbon tail is nonpolar and anchors the molecuel in the membranes
whats the chlorophyll structure?
contains outer membrane, granum, lumen, thylakoids, inner membrane and stroma
has a double lipid membrane
interior is filled with stroma
membrane bound thylakoids sacs within stroma
where does photosynthesis occur
thlakoid membrane (light dependent rxns (chlorophyll is embedded in the thylakoid membranes)
stroma (light independent rxns
