lesson 4 gene expression Flashcards
whats a gene and a genome
a gene is a specific sequence of DNA that encodes for a polypeptide or RNA molecule
a genome is an organisms total dna that is the complete genetic makeup
what are the two processes in gene expression
transcription: a DNA sequence serves as a template for the synthesis of mRNA.
translation: an mRNA sequence serves as a template for the synthesis of protein.
what are the genetic codes three important characteristics?
redundant: more than one codon can code for the same amino acid
continous: the code is read as a series of three letter codons
universal: Almost all organisms build proteins with the same genetic code.
what are the three RNAs?
mRNA: the template for transcription
tRNA: the translation of mRNA
rRNA: the translation of mRNA.
