Unit 18 - Variation And Selection Flashcards
What is variation?
Variation is the difference between individuals of the same species
What is genetic variation?
Genetic variation os the differences in the genotypes of individuals
What is phenotypic variation?
Phenotypic variation is the differences in external and internal appearance
What is continuous variation?
Continuous variation is influenced by genes and the environment resulting in a range of phenotypes, like for example height of humans
What is discontinuous variation?
Discontinuos variation results in a small number of phenotypes with no intermediates
What is mutation?
Mutation is a random change in the sequence of bases in DNA
What does mutation cause?
Mutation causes new proteins to be made
When does mutation occur?
Mutation can occur when cells divide
What is sickle cell anaemia?
Sickle cell anaemia is a genetic disease caused by an allele of the gene for haemoglobin
What is and adaptive feature?
An adaptive feature is a characteristic that animals inherit to help them live in their habitat
What is natural selection?
Natural selection is the process by which organisms that are well adapted to their environment are more likely to survive
What is selective breeding?
Selective breeding involves humans crossing animals with the best features for a new generation
