Unit 12 - Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
Respiration involves a number of chemical reactions that break down nutrient molecules, such as glucose, in living cells to release energy
What is aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration means release of energy from glucose using oxygen
What is a anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration means release of energy from glucose without oxygen
Where does respiration happen and what does it involve?
Respiration happens in mitochondria of cells, and involves release of energy from glucose
In what molecule is energy released in?
ATP
Uses of ATP
Movement requires energy for muscle contraction
Sending nerve impulses
Active transport to move molecules against concentration gradient
Building proteins for growth and repair
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
C6 H12 O6 + 6O2 — 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
What is the equation of anaerobic respiration?
Glucose — lactic acid + energy
