Unit 13 - Excretion Flashcards
What is excretion?
Excretion is the removal of waste products, toxic materials and substances in excess from the body
What are the main two excretory products in the human body?
Carbon dioxide and urea
How is urea formed and used as an excretory product?
Urea is made in the liver from excess amino acids. It is carried to the kidneys in the plasma where it is filtered out and leaves the body in the form of urine.
How is carbon dioxide used as an excretory product?
Carbon dioxide is excreted through the lungs
What is assimilation?
Assimilation means that food molecules that have been absorbed now become part of the cells.
The role of the liver in excretion
It breaks down toxins like drugs or alcohol
It produces bile (helps digestion)
Assimilates glucose and stores it in the form of glycogen
Assimilates amino acids
What is the urinary system made up of?
The urinary system consists of the kidneys, urethra, bladder and uterus.
The role of the kidneys in the urinary system
The kidneys filter materials out of the blood, take back useful substances into the blood and control the water lost in the urine
What are the possible treatments of kidney damage?
Dialysis and transplant
What is Kidney dialysis?
Dialysis is when a machine removes urea and other toxic chemicals out of the blood
What is kidney transplant?
A transplant involves putting a new kidney into the body to replace the old one
