Unit 17 - Inheritance Flashcards
What is a chromosome?
A chromosome is a thread like structure found in the nucleus
What is a gene?
A gene is a part of the chromosome that codes for a particular protein
What is a homozygous?
A homozygous is two alleles that are the same
What is heterozygous?
A heterozygous is two alleles that are different
What is a phenotype?
A phenotype is an observable characteristic of someone
What is a genotype?
A genotype is a gene you can’t see
What is an allele?
A different version of a gene
What is inheritance?
Inheritance is the transfer of genetic information from generation to generation
What is mitosis?
Mistosis produce slaughter cells that are genetically identical and have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell
What is meiosis?
Meiosis is a reduction in which the chromosome number is halved from diploid to haploid, meaning that the cells are genetically different
What is monohybrid inheritance?
Monohybrid inheritance involves the inheritance of a single characteristic such as plant height
How is sex determined?
Sex is determined by the sex chromosomes, X and Y. Males are XY and females XX
