How did the concept of Manifest Destiny impact the development of the nation?
It allowed James K. Polk to take Texas and Oregon territory and add it to the US, allowing US to gain more land and more power.

What was the significance of the Missouri Compromise?
It allowed Missouri to join the union as a slave state and Maine would join as a non-slave state. It also drew a border between North and South. This also made Clay involved, gaining his name “The Great Compromiser”. This could cause a lot of problems in the future.
What were the causes and effects of the Texas War for Independence?
Cause- Texas didn’t want to follow the rules of Mexico
Effect: Texas won their independence war, breaking away from Mexico becoming its own country but then joined US later.
What is the impact of James K. Pol’s presidency?
It allowed Oregon and Texas to join the US, naming him the Manifest Destiny President by this (he was already known as the Dark Horse Candidate) and Mexico declaring war on the US.
What is the significance of the Gadsden Purchase?
To help expand the transcontinental railroad construction across the US

It allowed the population to increase, creating more diversity in CA.
Why was the Compromise of 1850 significant?
Allowed CA to be a part of the union, popular sovereignty to occur, ban the slave trade in DC, and enforced fugitive slave law. Causing tension to occur between North and South.
What were the effects of the Kansas-Nebraska Act?
It led to more tension on slavery, bleeding Kansas, and also the civil war much later.
What did the Supreme Court rule in the Dred Scott v. Sandford decision?
They said that Dred Scott can’t be granted freedom because he was African American and a Slave.
What were the arguments presented by Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in the Lincoln-Douglas Debates?
Lincoln argued that slavery should be abolished while Douglas stated that popular sovereignty of slavery should be in use (basically against Lincoln’s argument)

The belief of U.S. was meant to extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

When U.S. bought South-western land from Mexico after winning the Mexican-American war.

At the tip of Utah, U.S bought that and a few other pieces of land for a lot of money to create the South-western part of the trans-continental railroad.

People who in 1949 came to CA during the CA Gold Rush.
Define “Texas War for Independence.”
Due to Texas not wanting to follow Mexico’s laws (majorly having an issue with the slavery law of no slaves) & they went to war with Mexico to gain independence. They won this battle with the help of Houston, gaining independence.

After Texas joined the US, Mexico got mad and a war happened between the US and Mexico at the Texas border line, winning the war and leading to the Mexican Cession.

When James Marshall discovered gold in Sutter’s Mill and it caused a lot of people to immigrate here, making CA diverse.

Northern Whigs, Democrats and Free-Spoil Party joined as one creating this party led by Lincoln.
Define “Bleeding Kansas”.
During the vote for The Kansas-Nebraska Act to see if Kansas would become a slave state or not, some Missouri people snuck over and rigged the vote, making Kansas a slave state. This caused lots of tensions between Pro-slavery people and abolitionists. So violence broke out with these people fighting out on Kansas streets.
Define “Preston Brooks’ Attacks on Charles Sumner”.
Sumner gave a speech for anti-slavery, pointing out Andrew Brooks. Preston got mad and beat him with a cane. Southerners supported this, sending him canes.
Define “John Brown’s Raid at Harpers Ferry.”
After the Kansas attack, he went to VA to attack Harpers Ferry and failed. His sons died and he was sent to trail.
Define “Dred Scott v. Sandford, 1857.”
Case between Scott and Supreme Court in which Scott was not granted freedom because he was a slave and African-American.
Define “Lincoln-Douglas Debates.”
Debates between Douglas and Lincoln in which Lincoln delivered his famous speech, “House Divided”. Douglas won the seat in Senate and Lincoln was recognized for his words in that speech.
