Unit 1-pH Flashcards
pH
hydrogen ion concentration
formula: -log [H+]
pH of 7 is only neutral with pure water @ 25 degrees celcius
Autoionization
transfer of a proton from one water molecule to another
if temp increases, autoionizatoin increases
Acidic Solution
donation of protons
higher concentration of H+ ions than OH (hydroxyls)
pH is less than 7
Basic Solution
accepts protons
higher concentration of OH than H+ ions
pH is greater than 7
Neutral Solution
equal concentration of H+ and OH-
Buffers
weak acids or bases that react with strong acids or bases to prevent changes in pH
pKa in buffers prevents a solution from becomes to acidic or too basic
buffers keep pH the same
Bicarbonate is the most important buffer because it allows pH to shift a little (pKa=6.4)
pKa
pH when it is half ionized and half is not
