Define growth
It is variable across different parts of the body, an increase in some measured quantity such as height, weight.
Define development
complex changes that follow an orderly sequence including an increase in skills and abilities.
Define milestone
an ability achieved by most children by a certain age, eg walking, crawling.
What are gross motor skills?
Large movements involving larger muscles eg walking, crawling, rolling over
what are fine motor skills?
Small movements involving smaller muscles, mainly the fingers eg holding cutlery
What are the 6 life stages and age range?
Infancy (0-2)
early childhood (3-8)
adolescence (9-18)
Early adulthood (19-45)
Middle adulthood (46-65)
Late adulthood (65+)
What are the key milestones for physical development?
Sitting up - 6 months
Standing - 8-10 months
Cruising - 8-10 months
Walking - 12-13 months
What is a palmar grasp?
When an object is placed or strokes the palm, their fingers will close and grasp it, eg grasp onto someone’s finger
What is a pincer grasp?
the index finger and thumb pick up small things eg pick raisins, push buttons
How can you support a baby to lift its head up ?
Tummy Time
What is a tripod grasp ?
Using their thumb, index and middle fingers to pick a pencil up
What are the fine motor skills for each age in childhood?
3 - turn pages of a book
4- manipulate small objects, tripod grip, hand eye coordination
5- Write their name, draw
8- joined up writing
What are the gross motor skills for each age in childhood ?
3- run, ride a tricycle
4- kick
5- hop, walk in straight line
6- skip, ride a bike
7- run forwards and backwards
8- good strength and body coordination
What is puberty?
a period of rapid growth where young people reach sexual maturity and become biologically able to reproduce and sexual characteristics develop
