what is Alzheimer’s
a type of dementia in which the brain functioning declines. it affects memory and thinking skills etc
what are the causes of Alzheimer’s
the exact cause is unknown
- untreated depression
-family hisotry
-lifestyle factors linked with cardiovascular disease
what are the symptoms of Alzheimer’s
- confusion, get lost in familiar places
- loss of mobility
-personality changes - problems with rememebering significant events
- problems with STM and LTM
- problems with speech
how does ageing effect sight
impaired or loss of sight, may need glasses
how does ageing affect hearing
impaired or loss of hearing, may need hearing aids
how does ageing affect taste/smell
nerves in the tongue and nose are damage which reduces smell and taste
how does ageing affect touch
- brain surgery, brain problems or confusion can cause reduced sensations
- decreased blood flow to nerve ending of the brain and spinal cord can reduce sensation
- reduced sensation in legs or feet can reduce the ability to walk as you struggle to percieve your body in relation to the floor
what is osteoarthiritis
- wear and tear of the joints
- thinning of joint cartilage
- lack of cartilage causes joints to rub together
causes of osteoarthiritis
- wear and tear disease
- obesity
- elderly people, women
- repeatedly putting stress on joints
symptoms of osteoarthiritis
- pain and swelling of the joints
- stiffness in the joints
- loss of flexibility
what lifestyle factors cause cardiovascular disease
- smoking- substances in tobacco can damage and narrow arteries
- diet - a high fat diet can incrase blood pressure and blood cholestrol in arteries which causes them to narrow
- inactivity- increase blood cholestrol
- obesit- increase blood pressure
what are the effects of cardiovascular disease
- stress- uncertaintty of heart attack
- loss of stamina- get out of breath easily
- pain- chest pain due to high blood pressures
