They have achieved their life goals eg family, job, house

They can’t carry out tasks on their own so they are less confident and less independent

They go from being married to a widower
They may develop anxiety and depression
They have a lower self image as they lose identity as no longer in a couple

They may have a state pension so they don’t have a lot of money to live off

How might culture affect an older persons care
Some cultures take care of older people at home with their family rather than a care home
What is the social disengagement theory
When older people remove themselves from society because they belive they are incapable of socialising or they may feel like a burden on other because of their ill health or loss of mobility
Strength of the social disengagement theory
At the time this theory came about there was no access to the internet or transport so older people couldn’t stay in close contact with friends or family which is what this theory suggests
Weakness of social disengagement theory
Today there is lots of access to internet and transport so is this theory even relevant
What is the activity their
Opposite of social Disengagement theory as this theory suggests that older people should stay as active as they can by making new hobbies or joining social groups and they should avoid isolation
Strength of activity theory
There is some research that suggests that some older people look forward to retiring because they have the opportunity to take up new hobbies
Weakness of activity theory
Lots of older people cannot take up activities as they may have ill health or loss of mobility
