What is solo play?
when an infant plays on their own because they havn’t developed their social skills to play with other infants
What does solo play help an infant to do?
Explore the environment at their own pace
become self-reliant
focus their attention
What is parallel play?
When an infant plays alongside other children, don’t share their toys, engrossed in their own activity
What is cooperative play?
Children play with other children, share toys, make friends because they have developed social and language skills
What are the practical benefits of friendships?
- help with traumatic life events , eg, death
- help maintain a healthy lifestyle, eg, encourage to exercise and eat healthy
What are the emotional benefits of friendships?
- help avoid loneliness
- reduce stress and depression
- sense of belonging, increase self esteem and self image
What are the effects of peer pressure?
They can encourage risky behavior, alcohol, drugs, unprotected sex
How can adolescents resist peer pressure?
Talk to a trusted adult - provide emotional support, educate them on risky behaviours
- Find confidence and strength to say no
- find friends with similar values and will not encourage risky behaviour
What are the two types of relationships
informal- between family and friends, promote positive self-concept, emotional attachment
formal - between colleagues, or pupil and teacher, no emotional attachment
How does an infant develop independence?
- Start to eat or walk on their own
How does a child gain independence?
Choose what to wear, get dressed on their own, make friends at school
