What is an example of scripture in the catholic church?

What is tradition?
Wisdom found in the lives and writings of Christians
What is magisterium?
Pope and Bishops - those authorised to interpret scripture and tradition
Who was the first Pope - quote that shows this?
Simon Peter - ‘‘You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church” Jesus to Peter
What is the bible?
Bible is seen as the word of God - Catholics believe this means the writers were guided by the holy spirit - often called a library as it it as a collection of separate books, poems and parables
Do Catholics embrace the BIG BANG?
Yes - the catholic church fully embraces the Big Bang
What does Genesis teach about the nature of God?
- God is creator - God created everything and anything
- God is omnipotent - power to do as he wants
- God is transcendent - only needs his word in order to create
What does it mean God is Transcendent?
- God only needs his word in order to create - when God says ‘let there be…’ things immediately come into being
- God is beyond human understanding - cannot be described in human words or understood by human minds
What does it mean God is omnipotent?
God has the power to do what he wants everything he makes ‘is very good’ has the power to make it exactly as he wants

‘Then God said let there be light and there was light’

What does it mean God is the creator?
- Christians believe it means they should only worship one god
- all of creation is special and created by god so it should be looked after
- God created humans in his image - humans share quality’s with god which allows humans to have a close relationship with god
How is Adam shown in creation of adam?
- presented as the perfect man strong and handsome (shows god creation is ‘very good’ and idea humans are the high point of Gods creation)
- reaching out for god - show humans depend on god
Misleading aspects of creation of Adam?
- docent say anything in genesis about God touching Adam to give him life
- God and Adam presented as same size - suggest man is equal to god
- God portrayed as an old man - reduces him to human levels
How is Gods nature shown in hand of God?
- God is shown as creator
- God is shown as powerful and eternal

- God is shown as creator

- Only Gods hand is shown, shows gods power is infinite and also race and genderless
- Gods hand is large compared to the cloud - shows gods greatness and power
- line extends from hand to edge of circle - circles symbolises edge of universe shows he created everything
How is free will shown in Genesis?
God tells Adam he can eat from any tree just not the tree of knowledge although god ‘commands’ Adam not to eat from the tree he doesn’t actively stop him he gives Adam a choice
Christians belief on sinning and free will?
Christians believe that using free will to sin results in turning away from God - this is why evil exists in the world - but using it in a good way brings us closer to god
What is stewardship?
Christians believe humans have the power and authority to rule over all over creatures - God puts Adam in the garden to ‘till and keep it’ suggesting we have a responsibility to look after the world with care
