Q

Discuss muscles of superficial layer of posterior compartments

-names
-insertion point
-function

A

There are six superficial muscles. From lateral to medial, they are:

  • Brachioradialis
    -inserts at distal radius
-function: weak flexor of the elbow joint
  • Extensor carpi radialis longus
    -inserts 2nd metacarpal
-function: extension and abduction of wrist
  • Extensor carpi radialis
    brevis
    -inserts 3rd metacarpal
-function:extension and abduction of the wrist
  • Extensor digitorum
    -insetion: extensor hood of digits
-function: extension of the wrist + MCP and IP joints of the digits
  • Extensor digiti minimi
-insertion: extensor hood of 5th digit
-function:extension of wrist and MCP + IP of the 5th digit
  • Extensor carpi ulnaris
    -insertions: 5th metacarpal
-function:extension and adduction of the wrist

Q

Discuss muscles of the deep layer

-name
-insertion
-function

A

*Supinator
- function:supinates the forearm and hand
-insertion: Lateral, posterior, and anterior surfaces of proximal third of radius

*Abductor pollicis longus
-insert: 1st metacarpal
-function: abducts the thumb

*Extensor pollicis brevis (EPB)
-insertion: proximal phalanx
-function: extension of the wrist + thumb and the CMC join

*Extensor pollicis longus
-insertion:distal phalanx
-functoin:extension of the wrist + thumb at IP, MCP, and CMC joints

*Extensor indicis (EI)
-insertion: dorsum of the index finge
-function: extension of index finger
