UE Osteology Flashcards
what are incomplete fractures in children referred to as?
greenstick fractures
what is the most common fracture site on the humerus?
surgical neck
What three muscles insert onto the greater tubercle of the humerus?
- supraspinatus 2. infraspinatus 3. subscapularis
What houses the ulnar nerve?
The groove for the ulnar nerve on the distal end of the humerus
What could cause avulsion of the medial humeral epicondyle?
Severe abduction of the extended elbow
Why is a fracture of the olecranon considered an avulsion fracture?
Because of the forceful nature of the triceps brachii muscle
What is a Colles fracture?
fractures of the distal end of the radius (from braking falls)
What is the most commonly fractured carpal bone?
the scaphoid bone
What is the carpal tunnel?
The passage anterior to the carpal bones posterior to the flexor retinaculum
What site does the subclavian muscle sit in?
The subclavian groove on the clavicle
What impression is on the sternal end of the clavicle?
the impression for the costoclavicular ligament
Where is the coronoid process found?
the ulna
Where is the coracoid process?
the scapula
Where is the conoid tubercle?
the posterior clavicle
Where is the deltoid tubercle located?
on the scapular spine
Where is the subscapular fossa located?
anterior aspect of the scapula
How do you get from the supraspinous fossa down to the infraspinous fossa?
the greater scapular notch
Where is the deltoid tuberosity located?
on the anterior aspect of the humerus
Why is the greater tubercle of the humerus susceptible to avulsion?
the supraspinatus, the infraspinatous, and the subscapularis muscles all insert onto the greater tubercle of the humerus
What makes up the humeral condyle?
the capitulum and the trochlea
The medial humeral epicondyle sticks out so far that it forms what?
it forms a groove, which is called groove for the ulnar nerve. The ulnar nerve runs through this groove and when you hit it, it’s your funny bone
Severe abduction of the extended elbow can cause what
avulsion of the medial humeral epicondyle
Inferior to the coronoid process (anterior), you would find?
ulnar tuberosity
Where is the dorsal tubercle found?
on the distal end of the posterior radius
Where is the ulnar notch located?
on the distal end of the radius
What bones are fractured in a colles fracture?
distal end of the radius as well as the styloid process of the ulna
Which metacarpal has a styloid process?
the third metacarpal (posterior aspect)
When an individual punches something with a closed fist, which bone is susceptible to fracture?
the head of the 5th metacarpal
a fracture of the head of the 5th metacarpal is referred to as?
a boxer’s fracture
If a patient gets his fingers slammed in a door, what bone is most likely to be fractured?
the distal phalanges
If a baseball pitcher presents, or a patient who repeatedly makes that motion, what is most likely the injury?
the glenoid labrum is torn
Why does the glenoid labrum tear?
in response to a sudden contraction of the biceps brachii
Where does a glenoid labrum tear occur?
in the anteriorsuperior part of the labrum
