Clinical Notes Flashcards
What runs through the carpal tunnel?
tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus and superficialis muscles as well as the flexor carpi radialis tendon and median nerve
What runs through Guyon’s tunnel?
Ulnar nerve and ulnar artery
The glenohumeral joint is susceptible to dislocation most commonly where?
anteriorly or inferiorly
If the elbow is dislocated posteriorly, what else is usually invovled?
tear of the ulnar collateral ligament
What is nursemaid’s elbow?
when the radial head is dislocated out of the annular ligament
What is bull rider’s thumb?
sprain of the lateral collateral ligament and even avulsion of the lateral part of the proximal phalanx of the thumb
What is skier’s thumb or game keeper’s thumb?
laxity or rupture of both collateral ligaments of the first metacarpophalangeal joints
What is mallet finger or baseball finger?
avulsion of the attachment of the long extensor tendon with the tendon away from the distal phalanx
How is mallet finger or baseball finger caused?
sudden hyperflexion of the distal interphalangeal joint
What causes synovial or ganglion cysts?
irritation of the synovial sheaths can cause accumulation of mucopolysaccharide fluid
disease resulting in shortening, thickening, and fibrosis of the palmer aponeurosis and palmer fascia
Dupuytren contracture
what does dupuytren contracture result in?
a partial flexion of the 4th and 5th digits
What muscles make up the rotator cuff?
Supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis muscle
What muscle is the most commonly injured portion of the rotator cuff?
supraspinatus muscle
what causes the popeye deformity?
the tendon of the long head of the biceps brachii is capable of dislocating out of the intertubercular groove or even separating entirely from the supraglenoid tubercle, which results in the muscle balling up in the mid arm
