Types of Synovial Joints Flashcards
How many types of Synovial Joints are there?
6 different joints.
What are all 6 types of joints called?
Plane joints, hinge joints, Pivot joints, Condyloid joints, Saddle joints, Ball and Socket joints.
What are plane Joints?
These are joints that permit side to side movement but also slight rotation with each other.
What are another name for Plane Joints?
They are also referred to as “Planar joints”.
What does it mean for a joint to be Biaxial?
This means that they permit movement around 2 axes.
What is an Axis?
This is a straight line around which a bone rotates or slides.
What is a Hinge Joint?
The Convex portion of one bone fits into the concave portion of an articulating bone.
What is another name for a Hinge Joint?
It is also referred to as “Ginglymus”.
What type of Axis does a Hinge joint follow?
This is a Uniaxial joint (Monoaxial).
because of this hinge joints only allow for Flexion and Extension.
What are some examples of Hinge joints?
Ex: Elbow, ankle and knee.
What is a Pivot Joint?
The rounded or pointed portion of one bone articulates with a ring formed partly by another bone and partly by another ligament.
What are some examples of Pivot joints?
Ex: Atlanto-axial joint and the Radioulnar joint.
What are some examples of Pivot joints?
Ex: Atlanto-axial joint and the Radioulnar joint.
What is a Condyloid Joint?
The Convex oval shaped projection of one bone fits into the oval shaped depression of another bone.
What is another name for a Condyloid joint?
They are also referred to as “Ellipsoidal Joints”.
What is another name for a Condyloid joint?
They are also referred to as “Ellipsoidal Joints”.
What are some examples of a Condyloid Joint?
Ex: Radoiocarpal joint (Wrist Joint), Metacarpal phalagioal joints.
What type of Axis does a Condyloid joint follow?
This type of joint is a “biaxial” joint so it permits movement around two axes.
The types of movements permitted are Flexion-extension and Aduction-Abduction. And limited Circumduction.
What is a Saddle Joint?
The articular surface of one bone is saddle shaped and the articular surface of another bone fits into the saddle.
What is another name for a saddle joint?
These types of joints are also referred to as “Sellar joints”.
What are some examples of Saddle Joints?
Ex: Carpometacarpal Joint.
What are Ball and Socket Joints?
Consist of the Ball-like surface of one bone fitting into a cuplike depression of another bone.
What is another name for Ball and Socket Joints?
They are also referred to as “Spheroid Joint”.
What axis does ball and socket joint follow?
It is a Triaxial joint and the movements are “Flexion-extension, Adduction-Abduction, Rotation.
What types of joints are Uniaxial?
Pivot, Hinge.
What types of joints are Biaxial?
Condyloid, Saddle, Plane.
What types of joints are Triaxial?
Ball and Socket, Plane.
