Bursae and tendon sheaths Flashcards
What are Bursae?
These are saclike structures that are Strategically situated near some joints to alleviate friction such as the knee and the shoulder.
What do Bursae consist of?
These capsules are made up of:
The outer walls made of a fibrous membrane of thin dense irregular connective tissue lined with a synovial membrane.
They are filled with a small amount of fluid that is similar to Synovial Fluid.
What is Bursitis?
This is an Acute or Chronic inflammation of the Bursa.
It is usually caused by over use of a joint in an improper way.
Where can Bursae be located?
They can be located:
Between skin and bones, tendons and bones, muscles and bones, ligaments and bones.
What are the Symptoms of Bursitis?
This can include:
Pain, Swelling, tenderness, limited ROM.
Treatment can include:
Oral anti inflammatory and injection of cortisol like steroids.
What is a Tendon sheath?
These are Tubelike Bursae that wrap around tendons that help reduce friction at joints.
They pass through tunnels made by connective tissue.
What do Tendon Sheaths (Synovial Sheaths) Consist of?
There is an outer layer called the Parietal layer made of
What do Tendon Sheaths (Synovial Sheaths) Consist of?
There is an outer layer called the Parietal layer that attaches to the bones.
There is an inner portion called the Visceral layer that is attached to the surface of the tendon.
Between the two layers is a cavity that contains synovial fluid.
Where are tendon sheaths located in the body?
They are found where tendons pass through synovial cavities.
