Joint Classification Flashcards
What do joints help the skeletal system do?
Hold the bones together in ways that allow for movement and flexibility.
What is a joint also named?
An Articulation/Arthrosis.
How do joints get classified?
Based on Their anatomical characteristics, functionally, and based on the type of movement they perform.
What are the 2 types of criteria needed to classify a joint?
1: If there is Synovial cavity present between the articulating bones.
2: The type of connective tissue binding the bones together.
What are the types of Joints?
Fibrous. Cartilaginous and Synovial.
What are the Functional Classification the joints have?
Synarthrosis, Amphiarthrosis, Diarthrosis.
What are Fibrous joints?
These joints have no Synovial cavity and are held together by Dense irregular connective tissue rich in collagen fibres.
What are Cartilaginous joints?
In these joints there in no Synovial Cavity and the Bones are held together by Cartilage.
What are Synovial joints?
In these joints there is a Synovial cavity and are united by Dense irregular connective tissue called a Articular capsule.
What are Synovial joints?
In these joints there is a Synovial cavity and are united by Dense irregular connective tissue of an “Articular Capsule” and often by accessory ligaments.
What is Amphiarthrosis?
A Slightly Movable Joint.
The Plural is “Amphiarthrses”.
What is Diarthrosis?
A Freely movable joint.
What are the joints that have several types of shapes and movements?
These are Synovial Joints.
They are all classified as Diarthroses.
