File server
Centrally stores and manages files so that other systems on the network can access them. It provides security,backup and extra space. Its easy manage files centrally but is expensive and is found in schools or offices
Print server
Controls any printer on a network and manages printing requests by sending the documents to an appropriate printer. Less maintenance is needed but requires some administration and is found in offices.
Application server
This allows users to access shared applications on a network like word processing or email software. It has better security and performance but there is complex programming found behind web servers.
Database server
Used to manage database software that users on the network can access and use to manipulate data. It is reliable and secure but is expensive and used by large businesses and government organisations
Web server
Manages HTTP requests from connected devices to display web pages on web browsers. They are found in devices and has great flexibility but is expensive
Mail server
Used to send and receive emails using the email protocol allowing email communication between other email servers on other networks. It is secure but requires technical expertise. Found in businesses.
Hypervisor
It allows a host machine to operate virtual machines as guest systems. They share resources of the host including memory, storage, and processing power (virtualisation)
