Data and system disposal Flashcards
WEE directive
Waste electronic and electrical equipment gives guidance about how hazardous materials should be disposed safely e.g. mercury can damage the environment
WAC
Waste acceptance criteria means that before equipment can be sent to a land fill, it has to pass a set of rules. Hazardous materials like elements found in computer monitors wont pass the criteria.
Hazardous waste directive
Ensures that businesses store hazardous materials and equipment safely and use authorised businesses to dispose of waste.
DPA
The data protection act has a principle that specifies that data can only be kept for a reasonable amount of time before being securely deleted.
Methods of data and system diaposal
Overwriting
Electromagnetic wiping
Physical destruction
Overwriting
This is when data is sent to the hard disk drive to overwrite binary values currently on the drive, resetting the data
Electromagnetic wiping
A machine called a degausser, which has a very strong electromagnetic coil, is used to completely wipr the hard disk drive
Physical destruction
This will guarantee that the data is rendered permanently inaccessible and the storage media unusable . E.g. shredding and sledgehammers
