Connection methods Flashcards
LAN
Local area network is a network where computer systems are located relatively close to each other e.g. a school. A type of LAN is a wired ethernet LAN with a high bandwidth and cables which make it harder to intercept.
MAN
Metropolitan area network covers the range of a town or city e.g. a university campus. They are usually efficient with high connection speeds with fibre optic cables
WAN
Wide area network is a network spanning a large geographical network e.g. the internet
Types of WAN
ASDL
Leased line
ASDL
Asymmetric Subscriber Digital Line is a method of transferring data across copper wire telephone lines. It requires a modem and microfilter for internet and telephone access. It has high bandwidth but isn’t so secure and is contended which means connection speeds are affected by traffic.
Leased line
A method of providing a uncontended, fixed bandwidth data connection. It has high bandwidth, security and connection speed but it is very expensive
