Types of salts Flashcards
Hydrated Vs Anhydrous. What are hydrated salts?
Some salts posess water of crystallization as part of their structure. They are loosely bounded water molecules that contribute to large well defined sharp crystals,
What happens when you heat Hydrated salts
They can lose their water of crystallization as a condensate will be seen on the sides of the test tube
How can hyrdated vs Anydrous salts be tested
with blue cobalt chloride paper which turns pink when water is added
Give an example of a hydrated salt
eg. Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate or CuSO4 . 5H20 (5 water of crystallization), it is a large blue well defined, sharp crystal.
It turns into a white powder which is the anhydrous form
What is a normal salt
A salt in which all the hydrogen ions from the acid has been completely replaced by a metal or ammonium ion
A normal salt should have a pH close to 7 when dissolved in water
What is an acid salt
An acid salt will use less base and will not use all H+ ions for eg. H2SO4 and H3PO4 are acids that can produce and acid salt
How can you test to see if one is an acid salt and the other a normal salt
Add 5cm^3 of each salt to two separate test tubes and 2 drops of universal indicator and match the colour of the pH, the lower pH is the acid salt
