Q

How are cations (positve ions) formed

A

when atoms lose one more valence electron (usually the atoms are metals)

Q

Reactivity of metals (cations)

A

Are based on how easily they lost electrons

7
Q

Negative ions (Anions)

A

Are formed when atoms gain one or more valence electrons (these atoms tend to be non-metals)

9
Q

As ease of ionisation increases

A

Reactivity increases (they have to lose to react)
Eg. Na becomes more reactive because it only has to lose 1 electron

Q

As reactivity increases

A

Reactivity increases. elements have to gain to react
Cl is more reactive because it only has to gain 1 electron

12
Q

The metals from Na to Al that is going from left to right

A

The metals become less reactive as ease of ionisation increases. Na which has to lose only one electron is much easier to ionise compared to Mg which has to lose 2 because they have to lose to react

14
Q

Atomic radius

A

Atomic radius decreases across a period as electrons are added to the same shell. The nuclear attraction increases as we go across as there are more protons in the nucleus. There is increased attraction between the nucleus and the valence electrons causing the atoms to contract from left to right.

15
Q

Are metals reducing agents? why?

A

They ionise by losing electrons, therefore between sodium, magnesium and aluminium, sodium is the strongest reducing agent

16
Q

Are non metals oxidizing agents?

A

Yes, between P, S and Cl, it is easiest for Cl to gain electrons therefore chlorine is the strongest oxidizing agent

17
Q

SiO2

A

is an exide of period 3 and has a giant covalent structure similar to extremely high melting points

18
Q

Which oxides are due to ionic bonding

A

Na2O
MgO
Al2O3

19
Q

Which chlorides of period 3 are simple covalent molecules

A

SiCl4, PCl3 (solid), S2Cl2, PCl5, SCl2
