acids/bases Flashcards
acids
proton donors
has excess H+ ions the more the H+ ions the more acidic
properties of acids
sour sharp taste, corrosive, electrolytes- electricity,
how many common acids are there
8
Organic acids
some are organic or contains carbon eg. citric/ ethanoic/malic acid
Mineral acids
anions in the acids found the minerals in the earths crust found in rocks/minerals
Bascity of acids
the amount of H+ ions that can potentially be produced per acid molecule
List all bascity
Monobasic- 1 H+ ion per acid molecule (HCl)
Dibasic- 2 H+ ions per acid molecule (H2SO4)
Tribasic- 3 H+ ions per acid molecule (H3PO4)
strong acids
completely ionised in aqueous solution
weak acids
partially ionized in aqueous solution
example of strong/weak acids
HCl is a strong acid because it dissociates almost completely. By contrast, a weak acid like acetic acid (CH3COOH) does not dissociate well in water – many H+ ions remain bound-up within the molecule.
ammeter
measure current reading stronger acid because there are more ions so it will ionize readily
