Group 2 Flashcards
Group 2 is known as
The alkaline earth metals
Elements in group 2
Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba
All group 2 elements have..
2 valence electrons, therefore they wish to lose two when bonding to create compounds. Losing two electrons allows them to have full outer shells and achieve stability
What is one property of group 2 elements
They are silvery metals
Compare to grp 1
-They have a higher m.p and b.p than group 1 elements
- They are less reactive that grp 1 elements. This is because it is more difficult to lose 2 electrons that losing 1 electron
When they react with water
They form alkaline solutions
Reactivity
increases down the group. This is because the smaller the atom, the closer the outer electrons are to the nucleus, therefore there is a greater attraction between the nucleus of electrons in Mg than in Ca. re. reactivity is based on the ability to lose elctrons
M.P and B.P
decrease down the group due to eaker forces of attraction between atoms
Hardness
increases as you descend the group
Reacts with oxygen
to form basic oxides
Reacts with water
to form metal hydroxides and hydrogen gas
Reacts with dilute HCl
to form metal chlorides and H2
Atomic radius
Increases down the group, extra electron shell, outer electrons are further
The electrostatic forces
Decrease down group 2 therefore it becomes weaker and the melting point decreases
Reactivity
Increases down the group
