NaCl and I2 Flashcards
Ionic crystals (NaCl) What is it?
An ionic crystal is made up of cations and anions in a regualr repeating pattern and held together in a lattice by strong ionic bonds. All ionic compounds are ionic crystals.
What type of bonding does NaCl have?
Ionic
What is the structure of NaCl?
giant ionic lattics
What is the physical property of NaCl (4)?
High m.p/b.p
Hard and brittle
soluble in water
Conducts electricity when molten or in solution
Describe the 6:6 coordination (NaCl)
Each sodium ion is surrounded by six chloride ions and each chloride ion is surrounded by six sodium ions
What is I2
I2 (Iodine) is a diatomic simple covalent molecule. Iodine appears as grey black shiny crystals which produces a purple vapor upon heating .
The iodine crystal can be described as a face-centerd cube (cubic arrangement). The molecules are held together by weak van-der-waals forces of attraction, this accounts or the low melting and boiling points
it has a large network of covalent bonds
